Welcome to Newsletter #11.  In this issue I have taken my inspiration from the current economic environment.  We are all so focused on what is going on with money right now that I wanted to draw your attention to your personal fiscal policy, the bank of you.  Mortimer has another example of his bad eating habits in beagle bites.  Sometimes I just don’t know what to do about his bad habits.  In the section about stress management I wanted to inspire some of you to read an article I published about a way in which we all may be able to work towards alleviating the current economic crisis.  Have a look and see what you think

Never mind your bank balance, what is your health balance?
In these interesting times we are currently going through many people are fixated on the economy and their own personal monetary wealth.  Hardly surprising really when all of the media is focused on what is happening financially around this country and the world.  But do we ever fixate or focus on the balance of our health.  What about health bank of me?  more>>

I hate to say it but I have to mention that other end of me again this week.  I grossed out everyone when I had an unfortunate incident.  I have told you before about how Mum gets mad with me when I scavenge when we are out walking.  I do have some items that I am very partial to when I scavenge.  Football season has started which means that the teams are practicing on the football field in the middle of the track where I walk.  The boys are not much fun because they are really focused on practicing and listening to the coaches.  The cheerleaders are different though!  more>>

Stress Management
After my questions to you about your health balance, it occurred to me that the state of the economy is causing many people real concern leading to stress and worry.  A couple of weeks ago I published an article on one of the social networking sites I am a member of about the economy and I thought it may be an appropriate to include it in my newsletter.  It does not focus on health and wellness but if it in some part changes perspective so that you are less stressed – Great.  If you are one of the wonderful people who has already read and commented on the article, thank you, I greatly appreciate your ratings and your comments.. more>>

Diet for Stress Management

A recent poll by the American Psychologist Association showed Americans are turning to junk food, alcohol and 'comfort' foods when stressed. I also see it every day in New York City - the more stress goes up, the more business for Starbucks. This might be a popular, but it is not a wise coping strategy and causes more stress in many other ways. Your diet & lifestyle have a profound and underappreciated effect on your moods and physical stress response. I will cover some basics of nutrition & stress tips that will help you cope and get healthy at the same time! more>>

What an amazing week!  We have 52 days left in 2008 and this week history was made. As a new citizen of the United States, I wanted to get the full experience of what it means to be able to vote and to take part in this historic election and I wasn’t disappointed.  When I became a citizen in July I was given the opportunity of working in the precincts during the election.  What better way to learn all about it than to be actively working within the process.  I went through the training to enable me to take part – after all votes and the way they are handled is extremely important – and on Tuesday I was working in one of the local precincts.  It was a very long day (6am – 10:30pm) but well worth it.  I learned a lot and watched history take place. more>>

Ok, this week I really got myself into trouble.  I caused my Mum to get stressed out.  I caused myself to be bloated and miserable and it was all of my own doing, and I must admit for a very short time I had a lot of fun.  But I have to ask myself was the short time I had fun worth all of the things that came afterwards? more>>

The Challenge to get rid of all my irritating little jobs that zap my energy took on new momentum this week when I finally got round to painting my kitchen ceiling – it has only taken me 5 years to get to this one task.  How much energy is that?  When I finally took it on and completed the job it only took a few hours and didn’t require nearly as much effort as I had anticipated and the reward is that it looks great and I feel a strong sense of achievement.  In this weeks Beagle Bites Mort gives his opinion on stretching and why he thinks it is important.  He always manages to fit in a good stretch around his sleeping habits.  The Nutrition article this week looks at snack bars.  more>>

The Challenge
So how is the challenge going for you?
We are about half way.  Monday, November 17th is day number 45.
I must admit that making the list was one of the best things I could have done to combat all those little jobs that have been hanging over me.  Here are some of my highlights so far:- more>>

Energetic Stretching
I have been much better behaved this week.  After my adventures last week I have been doing as I am told and trying to stay out of trouble – quite successfully I must add.  Life is much easier when I don’t scare the people around me.  I realized that was the problem last week.  My Mum thought I might get myself run over by a car since I don’t have very good, if any, road sense more>>

Is it health because it looks healthy?
I occasionally have the opportunity to visit and exhibit in health fairs.  One of the things I like to do at these events is to have a demonstration of how foods can be dressed up to look like something else.  Let me explain what I mean by that.
One of the recommended ways to eat healthily is to eat a little and often.  Six small meals per day are better than three larger ones.  If you cannot eat six complete meals then a snack bar may be a convenient alternative so that when you do sit down for a meal you are not so hungry you overeat and the result is your weight management is compromised.  So the easy answer is to eat a healthy snack bar, right?  Well not necessarily.  What if the snack bar you are eating is only pretending to be a healthy option?  more>>

Happy Thanksgiving In Beagle Bites this week, Mort talks about aging and a dog’s perspective on how things affect you differently as you get older.  Check out what he has to say on the subject.  Nutrition brings you the second part of the article on snack bars and compares them in a more evenly balanced way so you can make the choice of which is best suited to what you need.  With Thanksgiving on Thursday this week we mark the start of the holiday season.  For many people this is a time of great health challenges.  Holidays are supposed to be happy times but between stress and over-indulgence, more often than not the holiday period can be more problematic than beneficial.  In Kitchen Korner this week I have suggested some healthier ways to prepare traditional foods to help mitigate the effects of eating too much at this time.
I haven’t written specifically about the Challenge this week but the holiday time is a great time for celebrating the success you have had so far.  I certainly have a lot to celebrate and to be thankful for.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday, Liz

Getting Old!
This week was the third week of the month again and my routine has been all messed up.  It is quite unnerving for a beagle of habit, such as myself.  As usual, on Thursday evening Mum had the monthly meeting at our house.  Her friend brought Tuscan the Airedale Terrier around to “play” with me.  Only he doesn’t play the way I like more>>

Is it health because it looks healthy?
So last week I told you about my observations regarding snack bars and how they are marketed to us as healthy.  Should we believe what the packaging implies?  I picked just three of the bars commercially available at regular stores and looked at what was in them.  This week I take a comparable weight from each one and take the observation deeper  more>>

Thanksgiving Dinner

The traditional meat at Thanksgiving, Turkey , is already known for being one of the healthiest choices when selecting meat to eat.  To get the most healthy part of the turkey select breast meat and avoid the skin which is the most fatty part of this otherwise lean bird. Stuffing can be made healthier by using Whole wheat bread more>>

Welcome to Newsletter #15  I hope you all had an amazing Thanksgiving.  Mortimer had a good Thanksgiving but as is true of most dogs, given the opportunity, he overindulged in some of the things on offer and is now back on his routine for a healthy beagle.  Did you have Turkey for Thanksgiving?  In Kitchen Korner this week I have included some ideas for using up left-overs.  I have included a brief article from Hummingbird technology about stress and how to manage it when you notice it building  And finally today, the Challenge, how is it going for you?  In this weeks newsletter I am looking at the last month and how to drive through the finish line, December 31st, with all of those energy zappers out of the way.

Happy Thanksgiving

I had a really excellent day.  My family (Mum’s children) came home for the day and that always means I have twice as many people to beg from and the visitors are much easier to get stuff from because they feel sorry that they don’t spend as much time with me. more>>

Day 60
Tomorrow is November 30th, on Monday we enter the final month of the year.  60 days ago I challenged you to write a list of all of the things that were zapping your energy,  all those little jobs that you walk past every day and spend precious seconds thinking “Oh I must get around to doing that” or something similar.  So Monday is day 31, do you have 31 tasks left or have you raced ahead and got most of them out of the way? more>>
