Healthy, Wealthy & Loving Life
#16

Welcome to Newsletter #16 First, I need to apologize for the lateness of this newsletter.  I had the honor of presenting a workshop during the last two days and neglected to publish this week’s newsletter until today, Sunday.  I have included more about that workshop in my Editorial.  In Beagle bites this week, Mortimer tells a story from a couple of years ago when he caused havoc by being his usual beagle self.  In Kitchen Korner find out about mushrooms and try out a great recipe for Mushroom soup.  The Challenge is drawing to it’s conclusion with less than 30 days to the end of the year.  Read about how a lady in Seattle has enjoyed and utilized the challenge to benefit her whole life.

So once again let me recognize my responsibility and apologize for being a day late in sending out this week’s newsletter.  My lesson for myself is that    more>>

Beagle Bites
This week, Mum suggested I share one of my holiday stories with you.  This happened a couple of years ago when I was much younger and much, much naughtier than I am now.  A beagle does need to have fun after all.   more>>

Kitchen Corner
The hidden value of mushrooms
Mushrooms are one of those foods that people seem to love or hate.  For many people I have met there does not seem to be anything in between.  I also find that many people do not consider whether a mushroom is a healthy food or not.  Do you remember learning about mushrooms in school biology lessons?  more>>

The Challenge
This week I had a phone call from a lady in Seattle telling me about how the challenge has had an effect on her.   She told me how by breaking down the challenge into really small pieces has enabled her to create a lasting change more>>

Wow only a few more weeks left in 2008.  I swear that time moves faster every year.  It seems like only yesterday that we were celebrating the beginning of 2008 and yet looking back so much has happened this year.  Have you looked back on the year and acknowledged all of you accomplishments? In this weeks report on the Challenge, I am looking at exactly that. Mort has some opinions on instincts and feelings that he talks about this week.  He certainly keeps me on my toes. Are you SAD?  My guest article from Hummingbird technologies is all about SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder. Check it out. My recipe for this week is a little less healthy than usual but it is a traditional family favorite for the holidays and, remember, portion size is the key.  Check out the recipe for Mince Pies, my family’s favorite holiday treat.

The Challenge
The final few weeks
I am amazed at the response I have received to this challenge.  So many of you have reported to me on how well it is going for you and how great you feel having got rid of so much clutter.  Congratulations! more>>

Beagle Bites
I have two things to talk about this week.  Both are about my feelings and my instincts.  The first is my jealousy.  Mum got an email this week from a friend who loves dogs too.  The email was about a study that has found that dogs are capable of being jealous and sulking.  Mum laughed when she read it and said she already knew that.  Anyway I then gave her an example more>>

Seasonal Affective Disorder:
Blame It on Sunlight and Serotonin
The winter blues aren’t just a frame of mind; they’re also a state of mind. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), also called winter depression, is characterized by a drop in energy level, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, weight gain, and carbohydrate cravings more>>

Kitchen Korner
Mince Pies
In previous years before I was wise about my health and the consumption of refined flour and sugar, the holidays were a time of perpetual baking – Christmas cake, a rich fruit cake covered in marzipan and royal icing and served with cheese; Christmas pudding a boiled fruit pudding heavy in sugar; Gingerbread; Mince pies; more>>

Hi, Happy holidays. this weeks news letter I explore a lesson I learned from taking the 100 Days of De-cluttering Challenge;  Mort give some insight into beagle senses; Hummingbird Technologies provide another great article “Supermarket Savvy” by Jill Shuman, MS, RD, ELS, Jill gives some great Tips about how to shop healthily which can be applied to any grocery shopping – not just for the holidays; and in Kitchen Korner I have included a recipe for “Candied Yams”  also from Hummingbird Technologies.  Have a fabulous holiday and my advice to you as a health coach is laugh, enjoy and be aware of portion size.  Whatever holiday you celebrate, have a good one.

The 90 day Challenge I gave you is almost over.  I have been doing my own challenge and am very happy with the results.  One thing I did not expect when I started on my list of 100 items was the additional things I would learn along the way.  I have had several lessons from doing the challenge; the most profound was earlier this week. more>>

Using All Our Senses
This week Mum said I should talk about using all of our senses and I agree with her.  I have had a marvelous week for sights and smells, for sounds and tastes and for sensations on my fur.  I know we are getting ready for one of those large human holiday events because Mum is doing things that she only does occasionally and it means that all of my pack will be here for a while. It started last weekend when she… more>>

Supermarket Savvy by Jill Shuman, MS, RD, ELS
More than just purveyors of milk and eggs, supermarkets have learned how to entice consumers with smell, targeted shelf placement, and psychological subterfuge.  According to the National Grocer's Association, the average family of four spends $4300 per year on food. While this is a large chunk of the family budget, you don't have to adopt a Spartan diet to save money…more>>

Candied Yams
